I’ve heard that sleeping promotes memory consolidation.
It’s interesting to note that feelings of fatigue aren’t seen when the individual concerned is enthusiastic about their task. But when the mental effort associated with a particular goal is deemed too high, we will tend to select an alternate, lesser goal. This could be playing a game, making a new drink, or taking a nap. Bob Hockey’s Compensatory Control Model frames fatigue as a mechanism to protect performance.
